Arthur C Clarke , author of 2001: a Space Odyssey, creator of the fictional supercomputer HAL and the godfather of the telecommunications satellite, has had an extraordinary influence on the 20th-century imagination. Now nearly 80 years of age and living in Sri Lanka, his wonders include the Saturn V rocket which took the first men to the moon, the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya and the giant squid.
