Caerphilly was the scene this year of the first professional cycle race in South Wales. It ran for 45 miles through mining towns and green valleys to Merthyr Tydfil and back and was won by David Lloyd , from Merioneth.
Barrie Gill went to Caerphilly to meet the British riders now winning here and on the continent, and to weigh up our chances of soon having in this country, champions and events as famous as Eddie Merckx and the Tour de France.
