Travellers in Time

on BBC Two England

Six films of early exploration Introduced by Duncan Carse
3: Pictures from the Pole (1911)
Herbert Ponting was the foremost travel photographer of his generation. When Captain Scott commissioned him to film his final South Pole Expedition of 1909-12 Ponting little realised the hazards and difficulties that he would face. Scott summed up his job by saying: ' This photographing is the coldest job I have ever struck as well as the most risky '.
Considering the tremendous difficulties that he worked under, Ponting's record of Antarctic wild-life and his chronicle of the events leading up to Scott's fatal march to the Pole are truly remarkable. Narrator NIGEL PEGRAM
