Times Remembered: May Hankey

on BBC Two England

Treasured memories of other times-firm views about present times. In the race for today, few of us spare enough time to listen - even to learn - from people who also know about yesterday, as they talk to the Man Alive reporters.

Mrs May Hankey, the widow of a vicar, has been driving a car for 61 years. She spent her honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands taking three days to drive there in a 'Tin Lizzy' - the first of many cars mass-produced by Henry Ford. These were the days when the only roadside mechanics were blacksmiths, and if you had a bad puncture you would stuff the tyre full of straw until you came across somebody willing to help you change the wheel.
