The Natural History of a Sunbeam: 6: Survival Under the Sun

on BBC Two England

The Royal Institution Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People

The history of man's use of solar energy has been the slow story of a species groping towards a way of doing what green leaves have been doing effortlessly all along-making chemical fuel from sun-beams.
Sir George Porter concludes his series of Christmas lectures by suggesting a new direction for research. As well as better solar panels, why not better imitations of the leaf? He invites his young audience to look forward to a future when man can make not only electricity but chemical fuels, too, direct from solar energy.
