The first of a series about the Common Market countries. Germany
The traditional Gretchen-type is fast disappearing and young men are slimmer than their fathers were. The bullying teacher is now more likely to be a left-wing intellectual in trouble with his superiors. The Hausfrau is smartly dressed and her favourite word is ' froostration.'
This programme reveals a new Germany - a Germany which has come to terms with the past. It takes a look at three contrasting towns: Bochum in the Ruhr, the romantic university town of Tübingen, and Munich, ' the secret capital,' all of them making an effort to put themselves on the cultural map of Europe.
There are performances by the Bavarian State Opera, the Munich Ballet, a student theatre, and excerpts from the 1973 World Theatre Season musical, Little Man , What Now?; together with a fashion show, an evening in a pub, a house music concert and an unorthodox playschool.
