A weekly series of visits to music festivals around the world. The Santa Fe Opera Introduced by Humphrey Burton
In the spectacular but improbable setting of the New Mexican desert just outside Santa Fe is one of the great opera houses of the world. Every summer, thousands of visitors come to Santa Fe for its adventurous blend of grand opera and the Old West. This is still very much Indian country, and our film interweaves the vivid New Mexican background with the five operas in the 20th season - Salome, The Marriage of Figaro, La Traviata, L'EgistQ, and the 1976 production, The Mother of Us All, a pageant of American history on the theme of women's suffrage.
