The first in a short season of films about childhood, this award-winning Japanese film presents a new and unusual picture of the Second World War.
During the last months of the war Taro and his mother are evacuated from Tokyo to her family in a village in northern Japan. Taro enjoys his new life but at night he has nightmares - grandmother has told him there is a demon in the barn. The day he discovers the secret of the 'demon', young Taro begins to question everything he has been taught.
