When Louis Met Jimmy

on BBC Two England

Wrestler, miner, Mensa member and Doctor of Law: Sir Jimmy Savile has been all of these, as well as the childhood hero of Louis Theroux. Staying with Savile at some of his seven homes, Theroux attempts to get a glimpse of the private man behind the public persona.

Entertainment: When Louis Met Jimmy 9.30pm BBC2
What a wily old fox Jimmy Savile is. Having agreed to spend time with Louis Theroux and the camera team, the 73-year-old is smacking his chops at the prospect of a jolly good battle of wits. "I'm odd. You're different. That's not a bad double. Between us, we should be able do something." They surely do. Savile uses every minute of his 50-odd years in the business to bait, dodge and outsmart the deceptively bemused Theroux, all the while dangling tasty bits of insight into his character. It's a terrific bit of television, showing the eccentric ex-miner and club manager "warts and all" as Theroux tries hard to get Savile to admit that there is something nasty lurking beneath the public persona. Make up your own mind which one of these bulldogs is the winner. (FL)
