The Sunday Film: Khartoum

on BBC One London

starring
In 1883, after a British colonel and his Egyptian army were slaughtered by followers of an Arab religious fanatic, General Gordon was sent to Khartoum to evacuate troops and civilians. Gordon however preferred his own, totally different, plan of action and this spectacular film re-creates the tragic results while portraying accurately and sympathetically the complex, idealistic character of the man.
