From the Usher Hall, Edinburgh.
Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, written in 1800, when he was thirty, is the work of a young man rejoicing in his strength. Abraham Veinus has described it as a milestone in Beethoven's music, a major effort in reconstituting the vocabulary and syntax of music on a more sonorous and more overtly dramatic basis. Beethoven was himself the soloist at its first performance in Vienna in 1803. The vigorous opening movement it followed by a Cargo, in the remote key of E major, which had a magic all its own. The final Rondo abounds in energy and high spirits, and culminates in an irresistibly gay Presto in six-eight time.
