Sixth in an eight-part series in which journalist Simon Dring retraces his 1962 journey on the hippy trail.
Finally, Simon reaches India - but only after running the gauntlet of heavily armed Islamic militants along the Karakoram Highway. Still in front of him, though, are nearly 10,000 kilometres, 900 million people, languages and all manner of gods.
He accepts the colonial-style hospitality on offer at 87-year-old Mrs Bandhari's guest house in the city of Amritsar before joining up with a couple whose impromptu children's theatre has been playing from the back of their Land Rover all the way from Europe.
