The first of a four-part documentary series on the resurgence of Islam in the former Soviet states of central Asia.
The Red Retreat. There are an estimated 65 million Muslims in the republics of what was the Soviet Union, and, after 70 years of suppression, they have won a new freedom. Tonight's programme focuses on the gas and oil potential of Turkmenistan, a republic where the communist old guard is still in power, but where the shift is to a market economy and a long awaited return to Islamic traditions.
