La Grande Illusion. On 8 May 1902, a volcanic explosion on Martinique obliterated the town they used to call the Paris of the Caribbean. Only a prisoner in the dungeon survived. Today, Martinique is once more a jewel in the French crown. But the dilemma for its people is how to enjoy the benefits of being French without losing a sense of their own Caribbean identity.
