In 1968, Basil D'Oliveira, a brilliant South African-born cricketer who had made his home in England, became the centre of a row that rocked the political and sporting establishment. After scoring a superb in the final Test against Australia, D'Oliveira was excluded from the England team to tour apartheid South Africa - apparently on account of his race.
