An idealistic young doctor struggles against squalor and bad living conditions in a small Welsh mining village but finds that his greatest enemy is the ignorance of those he is trying to help. Disillusioned, he moves to London where, as a smart society doctor treating trivial complaints, he is more appreciated by his wealthy patients, but nearly ruins his marriage.
