Screen Two: Truly Madly Deeply

on BBC Two England

A new BBC film starring Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman

In Anthony Minghella's highly acclaimed first film as a director, Nina is a young woman unable to cope with the death of her lover Jamie. One day she misses him so much that he comes back!

This film won three 1991 Evening Standard British Film Awards. As a writer, Minghella has won many awards for his radio plays and is a contributor to ITV's Inspector Morse. He traces the "fantastical flavour" of Truly Madly Deeply to his work on The Storyteller, an American series seen in Britain on Channel 4 about folk and fairy tales, which won him both an Emmy and a Bafta award: "After a diet of griffins, trolls, giants and witches, the idea of having ghosts as central characters didn't feel strange."
