A popular German farce of the 1890s went through a couple of transformations on Broadway as The Merchant of Yonkers and The Matchmaker before becoming this lively musical.

Matchmaker Dolly Levi is dismayed to learn that the hay merchant she has picked as her own prospective husband is planning to marry a milliner. Horace is not exactly love's young dream, being tight-fisted and overbearing, but Dolly decides to win him back.
