This 20th-century version of the Cain and Abel theme set in the Californian farmlands made James Dean a star overnight. He plays Cal, a wild adolescent who discovers that his mother is not dead but is in fact running a brothel in a nearby town. The discovery proves traumatic for Cal and begins the break-up of his strained family relationships.
