Horizon: From Field to Factory

on BBC Two England

Horizon - man and science today.

"I think that by the year 2000 we may well see a landscape solely devoted to crops and completely devoid of animals" (John Bowman, Professor of Animal Production)

Many farmers think the future lies in the factory farm. This means keeping animals permanently indoors where they can be made to turn food into flesh far more quickly than out in the fields. It has worked with chickens and now it looks like the turn of other animals. Do these methods really work? Do the animals suffer? Tonight's programme looks at some changes that are taking place on the farm.
