The Wall 1958-61. In late Nikita Khrushchevtold the west that if forces were not removed from Berlin, he would annul the peace treaty. The deadline passed and John F Kennedy 's new administration exacerbated hostilities. Khrushchev'stop-secret 1961 operation divided Germany, and the East Germans erected the Berlin Wall.
