A series of six programmes which traces the pattern of speech in Britain today.
Introduced by Melvyn Bragg with comments by Stanley Ellis , one of Britain's leading dialect experts. 2: Cockney lives OK
The old Cockney communities of the East End have been broken up, the brick terraces replaced by concrete tower blocks. Yet Cockney speech remains as lively and vigorous as ever. And not just in the heart of the East End. Today you can hear Cockney amid the Essex countryside where the over-spill communities have settled and on the tongues of first generation immigrants from Asia and the West Indies.
