The series which has focused on famous sports personalities takes a look at what is happening in Russia.
Since the war Russian teams have become commonplace in international competition, from their Olympic debut at Helsinki to Henley Regatta, Soccer's World Cup to Wimbledon. Apart from golf and cricket, there are few sports in which the USSR has not taken part with at least a measure of success.
But familiar though Russia's stars have become, there is still an Iron Curtain of ignorance about how this vast country emerged from sporting backwardness and isolation, through an intensive programme of State subsidised facilities, training and organisation. A Roar of the Crowd team has been to Russia and filmed some of this missing background.
In tonight's programme the encouragement of mass participation in sport from kindergarten, through the factories, right up to pensioner age groups is shown.
