Winchester in Wesley's Time

on BBC Radio 3

PETER BARKER reads from Nelly Brooke. A Homely Story, by FLORENCE MARRYAT , published in 1868. Miss Marryat stayed in Winchester in 1863, and her novel contains a thinly disguised portrait of the city and of the leading members of the cathedral circle, including S. S. Wesley himself, who appears as ' Dr Nesbitt.'
