A Russian film with English sub-titles.
Starring Nikolai Cherkasov
Ivan returns to Moscow to crush sedition and wrest the power from the Boyars. The steps he takes against them bring him into conflict with Philip, Metropolitan of Moscow, once his friend; and his implacable enemy Euphrosyne once more plots against him, supported by the Boyars and the Archbishop. She arranges to have him assassinated and her son Vladimir proclaimed Tsar. But the plot miscarries, and it is Vladimir who is killed. Ivan, triumphant, vows to dedicate his life to Russia and to raise the sword of justice against her enemies.
Eisenstein's masterly direction, the brilliant camera work, and the barbaric magnificence of the settings and costumes make this one of the great historical films of all time.
