The Cardinal

on BBC Two England

continues a season of religious films, tonight starring Tom Tryon as Stephen Fermoyle

From his ordination as a Roman Catholic priest in 1917, Stephen Fermoyle rises through the church to become a Cardinal on the eve of World War II. During the ceremony, he casts his mind back over the personal and professional conflicts of his life: the question of abortion, the denial of romantic love, the violence of racism and the evil of Hitler.
Otto Preminger's epic film is a bold and moving depiction of the church in a time of great political tension filmed in Boston, Vienna and Rome.
