Around the World presenting: No Room for Wild Animals

on BBC Two England

A selection of outstanding feature-length travel and adventure films reflecting man's curiosity in the world around him

Michael Grzimek based the film on the book of the same title by his father, Dr. Bernard Grzimek. Both book and film are pleas for the preservation of the diminishing wildlife of Africa.
This film involved Michael Grzimek in a heavy personal sacrifice in order to raise money for its production, but it eventually won a first prize at the 1956 Berlin Festival, as well as two Golden Bear awards. Grzimek used his share of the profits for further work in Africa. He embarked on a long programme of research on the migration of the large herds of animals in the Serengeti, and it was on completion of this work that he was killed, when his light plane collided with a vulture. He was only twenty-four, but tonight's film with its outstanding pictures of African wildlife serves as a fitting and moving memorial to an ardent naturalist and promising young film director.
