First of a three-part series looking at the influence of European talent on the American cinema during the first half of this century.
Many Europeans came to Los Angeles in the 1920s - some for commercial reasons, others fleeing oppression in Europe. Focusing on key writers, directors, musicians and performers - including Thomas Mann, Fritz Lang, Max Reinhardt, Bertolt Brecht and Arnold Schoenberg - tonight's film tells how these emigres brought their rich cultural traditions to the big screen.
(Michael Curtiz's Dodge City is being shown on Tuesday at 6.00pm; Fritz Lang's Fury on Friday at 11.20pm)
