Britain Couldn't Do It Alone Forty years ago, at the end of the Second World War, both the American government and the American people wanted to withdraw their troops from Europe as quickly as possible. And yet, 40 years later, there are still 300,000 American troops in Europe - a major part of the United States' contribution to NATO. What led the United States to make this commitment to the defence of Europe?
