During the Second World War magazines encouraged women to help in the war effort. But this new-found independence was short-lived when, in the 50s, the consumer boom and the magazines helped re-establish women back in the home. And, with the post-war babies becoming teenagers, the magazines had found a new and lucrative market. Commentary read by MAUREEN LIPMAN
