The investigative series.
Waiting for Justice. Everyday thousands of people are held on remand in Britain's prisons. In the eyes of the law they are innocent, yet they wait for justice in appalling, overcrowded conditions, often locked up for 23 hours a day. Forty per cent of remand prisoners are not given a prison sentence when their cases eventually come to court.
Ben Essauh was charged with murder. He spent ten months in prison on remand, waiting for trial, but when his case came to court the jury took just an hour to acquit him.
David Jessel reveals how, for some, that wait is too long and too cruel.
