The Hurricane Tapes

Racial revenge

Duration: 18 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC World Service East and Southern AfricaLatest broadcast: on BBC World Service East and Southern Africa

This is the story of the second trial in 1976. We visit the Passaic County Courthouse, and meet prosecutor Ron Marmo and defense lawyer Lou Steel, the two men who battled it out in court. The episode centres on what the prosecution put forward to the jury: the supposed motive for the Lafayette Bar and Grill murders. We reveal details of another shooting, one which took place only a few hours earlier on that same night in 1966. Could it spell doom for Carter and Artis?
