When Borodin died suddenly in February 1887, he left unfinished not only his opera Prince Igor, but a Third Symphony in A minor. Of the Symphony only the scherzo was completed, though the first movement had been fairly fully sketched out. Glazunov, who with Rimsky-Korsakov acted as Borodin's musical executor, completed the first movement and scored both it and the scherzo. 
The scherzo, an extraordinary piece in five-eight time, also exists in a version for string quartet and in that form is included in the well-known collection of quartet pieces, ' Les Vendredis ' (' Fridays ').

THE WEEK'S GOOD CAUSE

An Appeal on behalf of THE CENTRAL LONDON OPHTHALMIC HOSPITAL by Captain Sir IAN FRASER , C.B.E., M.P. 
For more than ninety years the Central London Ophthalmic Hospital has provided treatment for sufferers from diseases of and accidents to the eye, and has relieved more than three-quarters of a million patients, many of whom have been saved from blindness. 
Calls on the hospital's services have continually increased, and further accommodation has become an urgent necessity. The appeal tonight is for funds with which to purchase a home for the nurses, so that the quarters now occupied by them can be converted to other uses.
