In 1906 Eric Coates gained a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. Later he became principal viola player in the Queen's Hall Orchestra, but eventually left so that he might devote all his time to composition.
All his works figure prominently in programmes of light music. Last May the first performance of his ' Song of! Loyalty '-composed especially for the Jubilee celebrations—was broadcast.
' The Three Bears ' was first played at the Kastbourne Festival in 1926. Like most of Coates's orchestral pieces, it is ingeniously scored, and modern dance rhythms are skilfully introduced throughout.
