GUSTAV HOLST has for many years been strongly influenced by Eastern lore; he has made a study of Sanskrit, so that he may translate for himself passages from old writings which appeal to him. In 1907 and 1908 he made a great impression on the musical world with two sets of Vedic hymns, which were recognized at once as profoundly sincere translations into Western music of a beautiful side of Eastern mysticism. The first series, consisting of nine hymns, which appeared in 1907, as Op. 24, is for solo voice; the other, Op. 26, is a set of choral hymns. In all of them. the mysticism which underlies the age-old words is embodied in Holst's music without a trace of the superficial, pseudo-Eastern devices by which less sincere composers gain their effects, and the means he employs are of the simplest; the composer has clearly won for himself a true affinity of spirit with the Eastern writers of long ago.
