Today's broadcast will take listeners back to the walls of Jerusalem 2,500 years ago, when Sennacherib, King of the Assyrians, assembled his warriors outside the gates and demanded the surrender of King Hezekiah.
The Old Testament describes the deliverance of Jerusalem by a plague which smote the Assyrians at the gates of the city. Ancient Assyrian tablets also tell the tale, but make no mention of the plague and declare in the words of Sennacherib : ' Hezekiah himself like a caged bird I shut up within Jerusalem, his royal city '.

In his broadcast today Professor Munro Fox will discuss a few of the pioneers who made painless surgery possible, and who gave the world the means by which to avoid certain diseases. The first anaesthetic ever discovered was laughing-gas. This was put into practice by an American dentist, Wells by name, about a century ago. Thereafter other researchers began to discover formulas by which mankind could be saved the terrible pain which it hitherto suffered in surgical operations.
