CLOUDESLEY BRERETON , L. es L. Paris
Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur
Cloudesley Brereton 's talks under this title tonight and next Tuesday not only serve as an introduction to the second year of the Adult French course which is to begin on October i, but are complete in themselves. From tonight's talk alone listeners will learn more about France, her history, her land, her people, and their characteristics, than they would by making a short stay in the country itself; and it is mainly for those who are learning French with the remote likelihood of ever being able to cross the Channel that these talks are given.
Cloudesley Brereton has a gift for description and knows his subject so well that he can talk fluently about it. But then he knows France and things French rather better than a native. On leaving Cambridge he went to the Sorbonne, and it is said that he was the first foreigner to take a degree in the University of Paris without using his own language. Going back again for short and long visits to France has been a lifelong habit.
One of his great friends is Bergson, whom he made known in England when he translated ' Le Rire ' under the title of 'Laughter'. Another of his translations of Bergson has just been published—' The Two Sources of Morality and Religion'. He is one of the recognised authorities on the teaching of the French language in England, but for some strange reason he has never broadcast before.

It has been calculated in France that a country housewife walks a distance equal to one-third of the way round the world, in her housework during forty years 1 In spite of modern inventions, a recent investigation in Great Britain showed that country housewives work, on an average, over fifty hours a week in their houses, apart from the strenuous job of taking care of children, and apart from all the outdoor work that they do. Figures from the United States are very similar.
A few weeks ago the Sixth International Congress of Scientific Management met in London, and women from twelve countries discussed the problems they had in common. They compared their suggestions, for improved housing, for the better planning of kitchens, and for testing of equipment. They spent much time considering problems connected with shopping, food planning, and budgetting. Eighty per cent. of retail shopping is done by women, so it is the housewife who is responsible for the best use of the family income.
Many of the suggestions made at the Conference will be of interest to the intelligent housewife who realises that her job is one of the most skilled of the professions.

This Overture is a tone picture of autumn in Norway. A short introduction, with a wistful little tune shared by oboe and flute, leads to the principal quick section in the minor key, in which the first main theme is soon heard-a strongly rhythmic measure. A calmer section brings us to the second main tune, played by horns and clarinets-a more gracious and cheerful melody.
Although Cyril Scott wrote several ambitious works at the beginning of his career, it was as a composer of short piano pieces and songs that he made his name. His use of daring harmonies of the kind associated with ' impressionism ' and his graceful and expressive turn of melody earned him the title of ' the English Debussy '.
Cyril Scott 's Piano Concerto, published in 1922, is a work of great strength and beauty, and is admirably written from a pianistic point of view.
