THE creator of Don Quixote , one of the great figures in European literature, was a Spanish soldier of the sixteenth century who fought at Lepanto and was at one time a prisoner of the Moors. Beyond that, little that is reliable is known about his personal history, but he lives securely in the mad knight-and his fat squire.
