Jeffrey Wilson, a successful play-doctor (when he had hoped to be a playwright), is married out of his class to a woman of family and money; and they have fundamentally nothing in common.
Jeffrey's chief affections are concentrated in Jim, the eldest of his three children. Jim is of military age, and with the war in Europe threatening to involve America, all Jeffrey's frustrations and anxieties have been brought to a head.
