by Agnes Ingle
The spot was Peking between the wars and the language was Chinese. Mrs. Ingle found it deceptively easy at first. It was only when she came to realise the subtleties and that the same Chinese word can mean the number ten, a flag, a lion, and several other things—just depending on the way you say it-that she knew she would never come near mastering the language.

Five broadcasts on the transition from Roman Britain to Saxon England
2—The First English Peter Hunter Blair
Lecturer in the Department of Anglo-Saxon in the University of Cambridge
John Morris
Lecturer in History
University College. London
C. L. Matthews amateur archaeologist
What actually happened in Britain between A.D. 400 and 450, when the central authority of the Roman Province collapsed? What sort of people were the first Saxons-when did' they begin to settle in Britain? And what customs did they bring with them? Was Hengist a real or a legendary leader?
In discussing possible answers to such questions as these, the speakers use the evidence available to put the puzzle together and show what pieces are still missing.
