' Begins the month. begins the year,
January again is here.
And see from Caesarea Town,
Good Saint Basil coming down.'
Production by Lorraine Davies
On New Year's Eve, Greek children go from house to house singing strange ancient carols in honour of Saint Basil. On New Year's Day, they proudly display the presents that Saint Basil has brought them, just as we do on Christmas Day. Today's play takes you back to the year of Our Lord 329, to Cappadocia. in the land we now call Turkey, to meet a schoolboy who was one day to become the most beloved of all Greek saints.

Appeal on behalf of the Salvation Army. by Richard Dimbleby, O.B.E.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to Richard Dimbleby, Esq., [address removed], or for Scotland to Richard Dimbleby , Esq., [address removed]
The work of the Salvation Army is world-wide, covering almost every phase ot human life. In Great Britain alone there are over two thousand Salvation Army centres with over six thousand fully trained officers at the call of the community. No matter what or where the need is, there the Salvation Army can be found.
Pioneering as it does in social service, the Army has experimented with a unique Home. The Mayflower, in Plymouth. where mothers convicted for neglecting their children are trained in housekeeping and child-welfare.
In addition. maternity homes and hospitals, approved homes and schools for girls, hostels for both sexes, eventide homes, goodwill centres (providing home care, clothing and bedding; mobile and other kitchens) operate in eighty towns and cities in these islands. The world over the same warm-hearted effective service is on call.
