A short crime play by R.L. Rowney

Here is a frank thriller. Sir George Sykes, steel magnate, is found murdered in the grounds of his Hertfordshire estate. Suspicion falls on his heirs, his two nephews, Gregory and Robert, first on one, and then on the other. A dear old gentleman, Professor Denny, who is staying in the village, investigates the crime, helped by his niece Valerie. Who committed the murder? How is it found out?

Of all branches of musical composition the French excel in that of song. Of the many great French song composers one of the greatest was undoubtedly Debussy. He worked at a particularly rich and productive period in poetry-when the symbolists, such as Mallarme, Baudelaire, and Verlaine were at the height of their powers. At that period of the nineteenth century French poets extolled music and French musicians extolled poetry. One of Debussy's favourite poets was Verlaine, many of whose musical' poems he set with rare insight and understanding of their subtleties, four of which are included in this programme' Green ', ' Fantoches 'L'échelonnement des haies ', and ' Mandoline '.
