Today, if it's an average day, 200 people will pass through the casualty department of Queen Alexandra's hospital. At St Mary's, an equally average day will witness the birth of nearly 20 babies. Elsewhere 26,000 items of laundry will be processed and 3,000 mid-day meals will be prepared to sustain the hospital population.
