A two-part film
Sir Robert Walpole, the first British prime minister, moved into Number 10 in September 1735 - 250 years ago. Since then, the splendid house that lies behind a very modest front door has been the centre of the nation's history, and the home of some of its most powerful People. Former prime Ministers and their wives talk about the ghosts of Number 10 and what it was like to live there; the families of Ramsay MacDonald, Lloyd George and Winston Churchill describe their days in the rambling old house; and People who were there tell how history was made in Number 10 during the two world wars.
A view is given of the state rooms, now restored to the magnificence that Sir Robert Walpole knew when he became the tenant of Number 10.
