Sir Alexander McCall Smith talks about his spiritual life and prolific writing career

To mark Pride Month, Zara is joined by activists and writers Ellen Galford and Chris Creegan. They discuss the progress that’s been made for LGBT+ communities, and also how the different attitudes towards sexuality that were prevalent when Chris and Ellen were growing up have shaped who there are today. 

As part of our occasional Inspirations series, Paul McNamee, the editor of The Big Issue, chooses one of his favourite pieces of music. 

Sir Alexander McCall Smith talks to Zara about his spiritual life and prolific career, with book sales close to 28 million copies in 47 languages. The novelist, poet and librettist is best-known for his series combining the worlds of Botswana and Edinburgh in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series.  

Delving a little deeper into some of the news stories of the week, Zara is joined by Aman de Sondy, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Islam at University College, Cork; writer Fiona Stewart, who also runs a Christian Arts charity, and Laura Young, an environmental scientist and climate change campaigner.

They’ll be talking about how challenging it is to change our deep-seated beliefs, and what we can sometimes learn from those who up-end what we thought was the status quo. 
 
With Andy Murray looking like he is coming to the end of his remarkable tennis career, a new documentary looks back on his life, and what it takes to be so single-minded in the pursuit of a goal.  
 
A new report suggests more people are turning away from bad news stories. We’ll discuss the reasons why, and what the consequences could be.
