Waterstick Insect find a Northern Ireland first.

Northern Ireland’s first water stick insect is found at Bog Meadows in West Belfast, Katesbridge sheep farmer Liam Doyle is a world class shepherd, and farming meets gardening at Dublin in Bloom.

Presenter, Nicola Weir, visits Bog Meadows Nature, in West Belfast, where 8 year old schoolboy Kohen Fitzimmons fished out a Waterstick Insect from the pond – the first found in Northern Ireland. She speaks to Kohen and Dawn Patterson, Community Engagement Officer with Ulster Wildlife, about this unusual insect and the Bog Meadows, which are nestled in between the M1 and Falls Road. Nicola also finds out about the case of BSE found in Scotland and bird flu in America from Dr Simon Doherty and chats to Katesbridge sheep farmer, Liam Doyle, about coming 8th in the World Shepherd Competition in France. Two dates in the farming calendar are coming up in June – two Open Days at AFBI in Hillsborough and Open Farm Week and, finally, Countryside travels to Dublin in Bloom to discover how gardening and farming are coming together to produce wonderful show gardens.
