At War for Algeria

They are Algerian civilians, French citizens of Algeria, conscripts, enlisted men and French career soldiers, independence activists of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the Algerian National Mouvement (MNA), fighters of the National Liberation Army (ALN), intellectuals and students, refractory, staff of the French administration in Algeria, members of the Secret Army Organization (OAS), auxiliaries of the French army, bag carriers ... All of them have long been walled up in silence or had delivered until now, a word withheld.
 
To tell the complex and painful story of this war, they have agreed, some for the first time, to share their experience. Their stories are touching, surprising, sometimes violent. They often challenge the myths and preconceptions that still surround this conflict, more than 60 years after its end. Because if the Algerian War is no longer a taboo, it is still steeped in rumors, simplifications and hasty conclusions. It continues to polarize passions and still triggers passionate debates and polemics.

The French identify it with a major moment in their collective history that has marked and continues to mark their political system, their society, their economy and their culture.
Described as the "War of National Liberation", the "War of Independence" or the "Revolution" on the other side of the Mediterranean, the conflict constitutes for Algerians a source of pride and a cement of identity, in spite of the memorial confrontations to which its account has given rise since independence.
 
To chronologically retrace these years of conflict, AT WAR(S) FOR ALGERIA connects the lives of all these witnesses and actors of the war. By confronting their perceptions of the events and their emotions, by weaving their words with numerous archives, sometimes unpublished, it is a question of offering the spectators an immersion not only in a story of history, but in a human experience of the war.
Their stories are our heritage today.
