Poet John Burnside, the history of nostalgia, religious literacy & sanctuary.

The history & power of nostalgia; poet John Burnside on his life, faith and his work; religious literacy & in light of the proposed Rwanda Bill, a look at the concept of sanctuary.

How reliable is our memory and just how subjective can we be when it comes to emotive recollections?  Connie chats to author Dr Agnes Arnold-Forster about the history of nostalgic thought and the power that it can have over our current decision making; topics she explores in her new book ‘Nostalgia - A History of a Dangerous Emotion’. 

While lockdown proved challenging for many regarding their mental health, for Glaswegian photographer Tommy Ga-Ken Wan it was a space to take on a new pursuit that has since become his life’s passion.  In our occasional Inspirations series, Tommy recounts why rock-climbing has been the key to a lifelong struggle with addiction.

Sharing his Spiritual Life this week is acclaimed writer and poet John Burnside, who reveals to Connie the impact a near-death experience had on his beliefs, lifestyle and creativity.  John also speaks about the inspiration behind his recent book of poetry Ruin, Blossom.

In this week’s Faith Forum, Islamic scholar Yahya Barry, Jewish youth educator Sydney Switzer and theatre critic Gareth K Vile discuss the concept of sanctuary from the perspective of faith, in light of the proposed new Rwanda Bill. 

Continuing on Mornings exploration of the theme of education, our Faith Forum panel will be examining the role of education in fostering religious literacy in schools, asking: does religious literacy matter and is school the place to teach it?  

They give their thoughts on the new comedy film ‘The Book of Clarence’ which tells the story of Jesus’s lesser known rival Clarence who is down on his luck.  But does this unusual, comedic take on a sword and sandals film work?  

And finally, with this week marking the 60th anniversary of BBC Two, the Faith Forum panel have their own nostalgic moment as they cast their minds back to the TV shows of their youth that helped shape or define their childhood.
