Zimbabwean Rapper Finds Her Musical Identity in Glasgow

Duration: 9 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC ScotlandLatest broadcast: on BBC Scotland HD

Available for 5 days

Eyve Madyise is a rapper/singer-songwriter and a refugee who has adopted Glasgow as home. Originally from Zimbabwe, Eyve first came to London with her family, but has since settled in Glasgow on her own. As she prepares to launch the lead single from her second EP, Sista! Beyond the Sky Isn’t the Limit, Eyve peels back the layers of her songwriting process, from acapella singing and writing lyrics in the Hidden Gardens, to going into the music studio to reveal how she made latest single, Um, Indecisive.

At the mixing desk, Eyve and producer Axor - aka Sam - show how they built her latest track. Eyve talks about the hurt she felt being rejected by her family as a queer woman, and how anger influenced her music for a long time.

Through her genre-defying music, Eyve is exploring her identity and weaving deep-rooted threads of her Zimbabwean heritage together with ballroom culture. The Culture Scene follows the singer as she gets dressed up and ready for her single launch at Transmission Gallery in Central Glasgow, where she performs her latest single for an excited audience.
