With the spooky season of Halloween upon us, it’s the perfect time for a ghost story. Erin Farley, historian and storyteller, discusses our endless fascination with ghosts and the need they fulfil in us. 

At the age of 64, on her fourth attempt, Diana Nyad swam from Cuba to Florida – an epic feat that has now been turned into a film. Herald Journalist and avid wild swimmer Vicky Allen tells Connie McLaughlin why being in open waters can be such a transformative experience. 

Ever wonder why time seems to speed up the older we get? As the clocks go forward, making us feel there is less time in the day, Dr Ruth Ogden, Professor of the Psychology of Time at Liverpool John Moores University, and Alastair McIntosh, academic and writer, explore the factors that affect how we perceive and experience time. 

Connie finds out about the rules of engagement when it comes to war and whether laws around warfare can ever be policed, with Mark Mueller Stuart, international lawyer and founder of Beyond Borders International Festival, and Quaker and academic, Alastair McIntosh.

Stories of incredible physical endurance in the great outdoors are aplenty, but what about those who have limited access? Louise Kenward and Alice Tarbuck, contributors to a new collection, Moving Mountains: Writing Nature through Illness and Disability, offer a very different voice to the genre of nature writing.

And writer Alice Tarbuck sheds light on the growing popularity of Tarot card readings online, explaining how they can be used and the ethical concerns around the current social media trend.
